VALLEY HILL RUNNERS NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER 2008

Hi.  Time to dig out those reflective bibs again I'm afraid and get used to running on the pavements again.

Thanks to Steph for the following report on the time trials;

VHR Time Trials

The first time trial commenced on Wed 25th June, with five more trials to follow, the idea being to collate the times and work out an average time (ideally over a minimum of three) to establish an average time for each runner.  This should produce a starting time for each runner with the aim of us all crossing the finishing line more or less together.

Ian Drury ran the second trial in 15.11 which was just after his hernia op. that particular night it was chucking it down with rain (what's new!) but I am led to believe that mud packs are good for ones complexion.  Also for Helena it was her first try at this but she made a good fist of it and ran round in 17.34.

Jude and Jim took part in the third time trial (Jude I understand was using this for training for the Nottingham Marathon) she had the energy to run back home with her customary rucksack on her back.  We all hoped there were goodies stashed in the rucksack to recharge our batteries.  Richard ran back (minus a rucksack) I return by car in the hope I get home first to use the shower!

I forget which time trial Amanda did a PB comfort stop, for one second she was in front of me, I blinked she had vanished, looked again and she was several seconds in front.

The final night and guess what it was raining.  Chris had the most reflective waterproof on, just as well because the light faded quickly and at least we had a bright yellow garment to follow.

Rachel's new shoes and gear worked the oracle as she crossed the line first and was awarded with a bottle of red wine, and holds the club shield for this year.  Ian D was hot on her heels in second, but boys will you regain it next year?

Anyone that is interested in seeing his or her collated times/average/handicap times let me know as it is held on my pc.

If I might just mention that both Rich and Nick had 5mins+ to make up on our first runner (Jim) which is incredibly difficult on a two mile distance and particularly it was such inclement conditions in which they were both obviously cooling down. However although the rest of the VHR hares had long gone they made great inroads and were breathing down most of our backs.

I know Bev will see the funny side.  Don't go throwing your lager around in the hope the tin will puncture, and you have to drink it BEFORE you get home.  Some people just can't wait can they Bev!

Finally thank you to all that took part, the weather can't be any worse for next year.

Mid-Year Meeting

Here are the minutes of the VHR Mid-Year Meeting courtesy of Steph;

Sunday 14th September @ The Commercial

Meeting commenced at 7.40pm attended by Mel, Steph, Kathryn, Bev, Richard, Chris (S), Jim, Ian (G), Ian (D), Judith, Liz & Amanda.

AGENDA

1)        Annual Christmas club run, this will be on SUNDAY 21st December from Fairholmes.  Start time to be advised but this year the route will be clockwise.  While referring to the club funds, it was felt that a drink and 1)      butty was affordable to CLUB MEMBERS.  A vote was made and passed to implement.

2)      Volunteer required to arrange/book the Xmas meal.  Amanda readily agreed to take this on board. Thanks to Bev who has arranged numerous functions.

3)      Applying for the club entry form for the London Marathon 2009.  Steph as secretary needs to apply by mid November; members who receive rejection slips return to her ASAP as successful recipients needs to enter by early JANUARY.  If no takers we will consider offering to a local club.

4)      Wednesday winter training.  Same as last year alternate Wednesdays commencing November, date to be advised.  If Richard is unable to take, Mel is happy to take on board.

5)      Date for the AGM.  SUNDAY 8th FEBRUARY 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start @ The Commercial.

6)      AOB- Expenses.  After discussion it was felt any stationary/phone calls needed to benefit the club would be reimbursable upon receipt.

Club vests- Amanda volunteered to be responsible for ordering any further new kit.

Club person of the year award to be re-introduced.  To be chosen by a secret ballot at the AGM and the winner to be presented with a Decathlon voucher worth £20.00.

7)      VHR Website.  Bev to gleam the pros and cons from Kimberworth Striders who have recently set up their website, meanwhile design and place a flyer in the local library.

Meeting closed at 8.20pm.  Mel thanked those that attended and for their input.

Cheers, Steph (Secretary)

Race Reports

Thanks once again to Jude for the following race reports;

Elsecar Skelter and Barnsley Hospice Hobble

Two brilliant long distance events where you can choose when you run and when you walk!

Both events had checkpoints and followed a written narrative of the route.  The terrain was mostly on rough footpaths.

Elsecar Skelter day was wet, it rained all day and I had to protect my written route description from turning into a mass of pulp!

The Hospice Hobble was on a lovely day and started from Cannon Hall.  Both events were well organised and a brilliant way to see the countryside.

Sandal Castle 10k

The day was hot and humid, and so were we after the run!  Me, Chris, Bev and Jim ventured forth!

I don’t know how I managed to navigate to park the car 50 yards from the finish line – but I did and it was handy when I’d finished!!

Everybody has gone home when you’ve finished the marathon, so you can exit the car park immediately with no queuing!!

Now one short and not so sweet one from me!

Reepham 10k

Reepham is in Norfolk in case you’re wondering.  After running on a very wet, muddy, flat, boring course I managed to pick up the Over 60 ladies Vet prize!  Luckily I’d gone home by that time so I didn’t have the embarrassment of having to explain I’m nowhere near 60 yet.

The only good thing about the race was the memento at the end.  I shan’t be doing it again next year!

Injuries (and a warning)

Beware of playing footy with Nick Morris at Filey!  Tim did and received 2 fractured ribs after Nick elbowed him!

Take care,

Love

Bev
